Coderch & Malavia

Detail Description

"Coderch & Malavia" is a sculpture project that revolves around the human body as the central theme of its artistic expression. This project is a collaboration between Joan Coderch and Javier Malavia, which began in 2015. Their work focuses on creating sculptures that embody an idealized human figure and a pursuit of beauty as an everyday artistic tool.

The artists employ a refined technique in their sculptural process, from the initial modeling in clay or wax to the final casting in bronze. The human body depicted in their sculptures is elevated to the realm of poetry, meant for contemplation and pleasure. They construct these figures by adding volumes together, aiming to create enduring works of art. The three Platonic principles of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty are embodied in their artistic creations.

Each piece of their work is designed to withstand the test of time, with the intention of lasting forever. The material they use acquires a unique expressiveness and forcefulness in their hands. Their approach to modeling the human body is classical, featuring figures that are full of tension and movement, enabling the material to convey various emotions and themes with a poetic touch. The sculptures often approach the limits of beauty, emphasizing the aesthetic aspect of the human form.

One of their sculptures is named "ALIS VOLAT PROPRIIS," a Latin phrase that translates to "She flies with her own wings." This title carries symbolic and metaphorical significance, emphasizing themes of independence, self-determination, and empowerment, which are embodied in their artistic exploration of the human body.
