Jan van der Vaart (1931-2000) was an influential Dutch ceramic artist. His geometric designs carry influences of De Stijl. At the same time Van der Vaart’s designs are focused on functionality. He also created series of objects available to a larger audience. Van der Vaart followed lessons at the Vrije Academie in The Hague where he was taught by Just van Deventer and Theo Dobbelman. He had his own studio in The Hague before he moved to Amsterdam in 1960. In 1968 he was appointed as teacher at the Rietveld Academy. As a teacher, Van der Vaart has been a prominent influencer for Dutch ceramics. He is seen as founder of abstract-geometric ceramics.
