Stand of Natural Root
Japan. Edo period, first half 19th century
H77.5 x W35.6 x D31.2 cm (30 1/2 x 14 x 12 1/4 in.)
The natural root forms an intricate, open stand that narrows toward the base before spreading into two straight and two angled ‘feet’. Although no join of the flat top and stand is apparent, it is likely inset and carefully polished to match seamlessly.
