Consul, Contender, Allegiant and Sleeper

Kathy Stecko (Detroit 1965)

Detail Description

My current body of work is a series of porcelain figures with removable masks that both distort and exaggerate the body. I use a combination of glazes, painting and found or fabricated objects to create a narrative for each figure.  By grouping the figures together, the open-ended narratives can sometimes feel like a waking dream.  The manipulation of scale and use of masks act as metaphors for an inner dialogue, heightening the emotive life of the work.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Kathy Stecko is an artist and poet based in Brooklyn, New York.  She received her BFA from the University of Michigan, where she was the recipient of the prestigious Avery Hopwood Award for Poetry, and MFA from The New York Academy of Art.  She was an artist-in-residence at Sculpture Space.  She has exhibited at notable galleries and museums including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Hiestand Galleries (Miami University), DUMBO Arts Center, Mana Contemporary, CUE Art Foundation, Art Miami among others.  She teaches part-time at Pratt Institute.
