description
A glazed terracotta model of a standing horse with rider. The horse is standing foursquare on a rectangular base; its head tilted slightly to the left. The seated male rider sits upright on the horse, the right arm raised, the left arm hanging down as if steering the horse. The distinctive features on his unglazed face and head, are picked out in black and red pigments, which would have been added after firing. He is dressed in a typical equestrian costume of a long hanfu robe and tall riding boots. The figure, horse and base are covered with glossy amber and brown glazes, with hints of green. This tri-coloured (sancai) glazing gives the animal a vivid and dynamic appearance.
