description
This 1917 drawing depicts a dike on the former island of Urk, with meadows to the right and the sea visible in the distance. Jan Toorop visited the former Zuiderzee island on several occasions, producing a number of drawings and paintings there. Like many other artists of his time, he was drawn to the island's everyday life, its fishing community, and the distinctive landscape of Urk, which around 1900 had become a popular destination for artists.
