Designed in 1973, the SZ15 is one of the most accomplished seating designs by Hong Kong-born designer Kwok Hoi Chan. Throughout his career, Chan was fascinated by the expressive potential of geometry and the structural possibilities of tubular steel. Rather than treating furniture as a solid object, he conceived it as a composition of lines in space, reducing form to its essential elements while maintaining exceptional comfort and visual lightness.
Constructed from a continuous tubular steel frame supporting a suspended leather sling, the SZ15 demonstrates this philosophy with remarkable clarity. The chair appears almost weightless, its open structure defining the surrounding space as much as occupying it. The angular geometry is softened by the natural flexibility of the leather, creating an elegant dialogue between precision and comfort.
Developed shortly after Chan established himself in Switzerland, the SZ15 reflects a remarkable synthesis of Eastern and Western design traditions. While rooted in the rational language of European modernism, its restraint, balance and economy of means reveal a broader sensitivity to space and proportion that distinguishes Chan's work from many of his contemporaries.
Produced by Spectrum, the renowned Dutch manufacturer celebrated for collaborating with progressive international designers, the SZ15 represents an exceptional moment in post-war Dutch furniture production. Chan's invitation to design for Spectrum introduced a fresh architectural perspective to the company's collection, resulting in what is now considered one of its rarest and most distinctive seating designs of the 1970s.
Produced in a limited edition of fewer than one hundred examples, likely around 40-50, the SZ15 is seldom encountered, and surviving pairs are exceptionally scarce. This pair retains its original black leather sling upholstery, whose beautifully developed patina lends warmth and character to the chairs. The softened surface of the leather provides a compelling counterpoint to the crisp geometry of the steel frame, illustrating how decades of careful use have enriched rather than diminished the design.
More than fifty years after its introduction, the SZ15 remains strikingly contemporary. Balancing sculpture, architecture and function with remarkable economy of means, it stands as one of the most refined expressions of tubular steel furniture produced during the 1970s.
