description
Andy Warhol's Muhammad Ali (1978) is a portfolio of four screenprints originating from his celebrated Athletes series, initiated in 1977 by art collector Richard Weisman. The series featured ten prominent sports figures, including Pelé, Jack Nicklaus and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Warhol photographed Ali at his training camp, Fighter's Heaven, in Pennsylvania, using Polaroid images as the basis for his portraits.
Through vibrant colours and striking contrasts, Warhol captures Ali's strength, concentration and unmistakable presence. The portfolio reflects Warhol's fascination with fame and the transformation of athletes into cultural icons.
