description
Isaac Israels portrays Lola Cornero on the balustrade of the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, overlooking the sea. The fresh colours and loose brushstrokes give the watercolour a lively character. Israels regularly went to the beach for inspiration, capturing the fashionable seaside scene in spontaneous impressions. His work reflects the international appeal of Scheveningen as a seaside resort around the turn of the twentieth century.
Lola Cornero (1892–1980), born Helene Rasmussen in Kiel, Germany, settled in the Netherlands in November 1915. She became known as a cabaret singer, film actress and operetta star, and grew into a prominent figure in Dutch entertainment.
