description
This exceptionally finely painted calendar icon brings together the entire Orthodox ecclesiastical year in a single composition. The format is unusually small for a calendar icon. The twelve months are divided into separate sections, each composed of four rows showing the saints commemorated and liturgical feasts celebrated on each day.
Easter forms the centre of the icon. At its heart is the Anastasis, the Resurrection of Christ, surrounded by twelve depictions of Christian feasts without a fixed date, such as the Ascension and Pentecost, as well as scenes from the Passion of Christ. Along the outer border, numerous venerated types of the Mother of God are depicted. The countless miniature figures, scenes and inscriptions are executed with exceptional precision. Thanks to its good condition, even the smallest details remain clearly visible.
