description

Adrianus Remiëns (Amsterdam, 1890-1972) was not only a sculptor, but also a painter and draftsman. He trained at the Amsterdam School of Arts and Crafts, where his teacher was Joseph Mendes da Costa.

Besides being a painter, he primarily sculpted human and animal figures, masked heads, and reliefs in a symbolic expressionist style. His sculptures were highly stylized with little detail. This is also clearly reflected in the gazelle. He worked for the Regina Pottery Factory in Gouda, and Winkelman and van der Bijl also executed his designs in bronze. He also collaborated with artists such as Berlage and designed architectural sculptures and facade ornaments for the Amsterdam School buildings, including those on Mercatorplein.

He lived and worked in Amsterdam, Blaricum, and Laren during his lifetime. He was a member of various artist groups, including the Dutch Circle of Sculptors, St. Lukas, De Onafhankelijken, and the Association for BK Laren-Blaricum.

His work can also be found in Dutch museums; for example, the Centraal Museum in Utrecht has a bronze deer by him in its collection.
