Photography

description

As part of his ongoing “Textural” series, artist and photographer Dan Hallman is exploring cyanotypes a 19th-century photographic process known for its deep blue tones by combining it with his text-based work. Inspired by a past exhibition that showcased both his photography and text art, Hallman began to consider ways to merge the two. Although he had once dismissed cyanotypes as outdated during his studies at Parsons NYC, rediscovering prints he made in the 1990s sparked a new idea: to turn his written texts into photo negatives and print them using the cyanotype process, giving historical technique a contemporary voice.
“I am creating with a photographic process first used in 1842 and giving it a contemporary twist with my, hopefully, witty and thought-provoking words.” D. Hallman
