description

This is a painting of the ‘Urnacingulatus potentipus’ (commonly referred to as the Jarmadillo), a newly discovered species in the family ‘Urnaprocreatidae’ of which Deleo excavated a schell in the desert in the northeastern region of Terra Ultima.
The genus name ‘Urnacingulatus’ refers to the urn-shaped shell and segmented body, while the species epithet ‘potentipus’ highlights the animal’s strong limbs.
The other animal entangled around the claws of the Jarmadillo is named ‘Poecilophis plumacristatus’ (Eng. The Plume-crested gracer)

The Jarmadillo uses its claws to dig into the ground in search of beetles, larvae, and maggots. But it may also attempt to kill snake-like species, such as the Plume-crested Gracer, by stomping or trampling them, much like the hunting behavior of the African Secretary Bird.
The Plume-crested Gracer, however, is not entirely defenseless. By attempting to entangle the Jarmadillo’s paws, it can sometimes destabilize its attacker, causing it to fall and become temporarily incapacitated. The patience and endurance of the Plume-crested Gracer in maintaining its grip seems to be a decisive factor in forcing the Jarmadillo to retreat or surrender.

The Deeper Meaning:
Even on the continent of Terra Ultima, discovered by Deleo, the evolutionary forces in nature prove to be a complex interplay of conservation and change. In the painting, the Urnacinculatus potentipus represents those conservative, traditional forces, while the Poecilophis plumacristatus stands for progressive change. The frame of the painting is crafted from the bark of the Black Poplar tree (Populus nigra), a tree that grows along riverbanks. Its seeds float downstream and sprout right at the water's edge, where wet meets dry. It’s a perfect metaphor: just like that shoreline, the boundary between progressive and conservative ideas is exactly where the most lasting concepts can take root, possibly growing into widely supported changes and real progress.
