Modern and Contemporary Art

description

This still life by the Spanish artist Antonio Barahona is tranquil yet rich in detail. Deep red and orange tones contrast beautifully with the complementary blue. The composition guides the eye from the tiles on the floor, through the view into the adjoining room and towards the light streaming in through the window. Barahona consciously plays with what he chooses to render and what he leaves understated: the flatly depicted objects, such as the bottle of olive oil, contrast with the vividly painted red tomatoes. It is precisely this variety that gives the work its distinctive character.
