description
Diederik Schneemann (1979, Belgium) is an artist and designer who grew up in Maastricht and lives and works in Rotterdam. He is internationally known for work at the intersection of art and design. Schneemann typically takes existing objects as his starting point. Objects that already carry meaning or a story: icons and products that evoke memories, emotions, or wonder. By altering their appearance and function, he gives them a second life and an unexpected new reality. In his series 'Cherished', Schneemann transforms personal collections of perfume bottles, Smurfs, cigar bands, and matchboxes with the care typically reserved for marble or bronze. Such is the case with this Painting Cupboard, which consists of approximately 55 oil paintings by underappreciated artists. These “Dutch Masters” have not achieved international fame, but Schneemann acknowledges the love, passion, time, and effort these artists poured into their creations by giving their work a second life.
