The Anastasis (Resurrection) of Christ and the victory over the realm of death are central to this icon. Christ, surrounded by an almond-shaped mandorla and standing with his feet upon the gates of the realm of the dead, bends forward to take Adam by the wrist and deliver him from death. Eve kneels before Christ and embraces one of his feet. To the left of Christ stand Kings David and Solomon, with John the Forerunner (the Baptist) behind them. To the right of Christ stand Moses and two other Old Testament prophets. The icon is painted in the style of the sixteenth century.
