Paulus Potter werd de "Beestenschilder" genoemd. De Stier van Potter is een van de meest populaire werken in het Mauritshuis. Gezien de bekendheid van de kunstenaar is het verbazingwekkend dat hij slechts 28 jaar oud werd en De Vlucht naar Egypte zou Potter hebben geschilderd toen hij ongeveer 19 jaar was. De fameuze herkomst en uitgebreide publicatie onderstreept de betekenis van het schilderij.
