Detail Description

WALL CLOCK WITH COW-TAIL PENDULUM
Dated: 1760
Germany

Movement
Weight-driven day-going movement in an iron frame, consisting of going and striking trains. The going train has a verge escapement with a short front pendulum, a so-called 'Kuhschwanzpendel' (cow-tail pendulum). The rack striking indicates the hours fully on a bell.

Dial
The clock has a prominent pewter chapter ring, mounted on an iron dial plate and completely covering it. This chapter ring has Roman hour numerals with half hour markers, as well as Arabic five-minute and minute divisions. The centre is covered with red brown velvet. The chapter ring is surmounted by an elegant pierced and engraved velvet-backed gilt brass front fret, depicting scrolling leaf motifs and bearing the engraved year of manufacture 1760 at the top. The time is indicated by a fine pair of brass hands, the hour hand pierced.

Case
The movement is situated in an iron case, mounted behind the dial. There are two doors to the sides which give access to the movement. The case is surmounted by a bell, hidden by the front fret.
