Biography



Valérie Belin (1964, Boulogne-Billancourt) graduated from the École Beaux-arts de Versailles (1985); the École Nationale Supérieure d'Art de Bourges (1988) and obtained a degree in philosophy from the Université de Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne in Paris (1989).



She has had solo exhibitions at the Center Pompidou (Paris), Peabody Essex Museum (Salem, MA), Les Rencontres de la Photographie (Arles), Huis Marseille (Amsterdam), Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Musée de l'Elysée (Lausanne) and Musée d'Orsay (Paris). She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Getty Museum (Los Angeles), Musée du Louvre (Paris), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), De Pont Museum (Tilburg), Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing), La maison Guerlain (Paris), Villa Carmignac (Île de Porquerolles), Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris) and many other institutions. One of her most recent exhibitions was ‘Origin Stories: Photography of Africa and its Diaspora’, curated by Tiera Ndlovu of the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach in the United States.



Her work is part of many collections such as those of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA, New York), Center Pompidou (Paris), Musée d'art Moderne de la ville de Paris, Kunsthaus Zürich, Los Angeles County Museum, Huis Marseille (Amsterdam), International Center for Photography (New York), J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), Musée de l'Élysée, (Lausanne), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris. www.valeriebelin.com.



Numerous publications have appeared about her, including in Le Monde, Interview Magazine, Frieze magazine, the New Yorker, the Financial Times, Le Figaro, Madame Figaro, Artinterview, The Guardian, Art Presse et cetera.



Belin was awarded the Paris Photo Prize in 1997, the CCF (HSBC) Foundation for Photography Prize in 2000 and the 6th Prix Pictet in 2015.



Valérie Belin received the title of Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres of France in 2017.



Valérie Belin lives and works in Paris.
