Extensively published and exhibited most notably in the landmark show at the Frans Halsmuseum Pride and Joy, Children’s Portraits in the Netherlands 1500 – 1700, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp presents a remarkable image of a young girl brandishing a fish in one hand while restraining a cat with the other. The lesson on display is that restraint in all things is desirable.
